Nursing (RN) Continuing Education Requirements in Arizona

Arizona does not mandate continuing-education hours for RN license renewal. Here is what that means in practice โ€” audits, records, neighbouring states, and the local rules that can still apply.

Arizona does not mandate any continuing-education hours for RN license renewal. There is no state-approved hour total to complete, no target to spread across the 4-year renewal period, and no state list of mandatory courses to book before your renewal date. For most registered nurses that removes the largest single item from the renewal checklist โ€” but it does not remove the checklist itself: the licence still renews on its cycle, fees still apply, and a lapse still stops you practising.

That is not the same as saying training does not matter. Boards still audit renewals, employers and clients still ask for evidence of competence, and rules change โ€” a state with no CE mandate today can adopt one, occasionally with a short lead time. Keep certificates for any training you do complete, with the course name, provider, date and duration, because if Arizona introduces a requirement later, documented hours are the only hours that will count. A folder of PDFs costs nothing to maintain and is impossible to reconstruct after the fact.

Neighbouring states are a different story, and this is where most confusion starts. Across the state line, Alabama requires 24 hours per 2-year cycle, Alaska requires 30 hours per 2-year cycle and Arkansas requires 15 hours per 2-year cycle. A licence that carries no CE obligation on one side of a border can carry a substantial one on the other โ€” if you work across state lines or hold more than one licence, each licence carries its own rule and its own clock.

Local rules can still apply on top of the state position: some cities and counties run their own licensing or training schemes for work within their boundaries, and employer or contract requirements are frequently stricter than the state minimum. And if you relocate, plan ahead โ€” moving to a state that mandates CE means starting from zero, because a Arizona licence with no documented training history gives you no head start.

Frequently asked questions

Does Arizona require CE to renew an RN license?
No. Arizona sets no state-mandated continuing-education hours for RN license renewal โ€” there is no hour total to complete and no state-approved course list to work through before you renew.
Are there mandatory courses in Arizona?
No. Because Arizona mandates no CE hours at all, there is no mandatory topic list to complete.
Is it safer to spread my Arizona CE across the whole 4-year cycle?
Arizona mandates no CE hours, so there is nothing to spread across the 4-year cycle. The cycle still governs the licence itself โ€” diarise the renewal date rather than any coursework.
Can I complete my Arizona CE online?
There is no state-mandated CE to complete in Arizona, so online versus classroom rarely comes up. Where a local authority or an employer requires training, confirm with that body whether it accepts online or distance coursework โ€” the state itself sets no rule on the question.

Compare Arizona with neighbouring states

Requirements differ substantially between states โ€” a licence valid on one side of a state line can carry a completely different CE obligation on the other.
