Electrician Continuing Education Requirements in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania does not mandate continuing-education hours for electrician license renewal. Here is what that means in practice โ audits, records, neighbouring states, and the local rules that can still apply.

| Item | Pennsylvania requirement |
|---|---|
| Total CE hours | No state-mandated CE hours |
| Renewal cycle | 1 year |
| Annualised average | โ |
| Online CE accepted | โ |
| Licensing authority | No state electrician licensing board (municipal licensing, e.g., Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections) |
Pennsylvania does not mandate any continuing-education hours for electrician license renewal. There is no state-approved hour total to complete, no target to spread across the 1-year renewal period, and no state list of mandatory courses to book before your renewal date. For most electricians that removes the largest single item from the renewal checklist โ but it does not remove the checklist itself: the licence still renews on its cycle, fees still apply, and a lapse still stops you practising.
That is not the same as saying training does not matter. Boards still audit renewals, employers and clients still ask for evidence of competence, and rules change โ a state with no CE mandate today can adopt one, occasionally with a short lead time. Keep certificates for any training you do complete, with the course name, provider, date and duration, because if Pennsylvania introduces a requirement later, documented hours are the only hours that will count. A folder of PDFs costs nothing to maintain and is impossible to reconstruct after the fact.
Neighbouring states are a different story, and this is where most confusion starts. Across the state line, Ohio requires 10 hours per 1-year cycle, Oklahoma requires 12 hours per 3-year cycle and Oregon requires 24 hours per 3-year cycle. A licence that carries no CE obligation on one side of a border can carry a substantial one on the other โ if you work across state lines or hold more than one licence, each licence carries its own rule and its own clock.
One caveat has real teeth in Pennsylvania: there is no statewide licence to begin with โ licensing runs through city and county authorities, and several impose their own examination, training or continuing-education conditions on top of the state's silence. The authority that matters is the one that actually issues your licence, often a city or county department, so check its rules directly rather than assuming the state position is the whole picture.

- Does Pennsylvania require CE to renew an electrician license?
- No. Pennsylvania sets no state-mandated continuing-education hours for electrician license renewal โ there is no hour total to complete and no state-approved course list to work through before you renew.
- Are there mandatory courses in Pennsylvania?
- No. Because Pennsylvania mandates no CE hours at all, there is no mandatory topic list to complete.
- Can I carry over extra CE hours to next year in Pennsylvania?
- There are no state-mandated CE hours to carry over โ Pennsylvania sets no hour requirement, so there is nothing to roll forward. If you complete training voluntarily, surplus hours from one year do not reduce anything the following year, because there is nothing to reduce.
- Can I complete my Pennsylvania CE online?
- There is no state-mandated CE to complete in Pennsylvania, so online versus classroom rarely comes up. Where a local authority or an employer requires training, confirm with that body whether it accepts online or distance coursework โ the state itself sets no rule on the question.
